SE London Welshman Ceri James has played on the London circuit, in England, Wales, Europe and the USA for around 20 years (in bands and as a solo artist). Performances have included Rainbow Bar & Grill (West Hollywood LA), Ronnie Scott’s (upstairs) and Anthony Gormley’s Plinth (Trafalgar Square). To date he’s released six studio albums and collaborated with various artists and musicians. Emerging from the New Cross scene in the 00’s Ceri’s music has evolved and changed over the years but tends to be rooted in country/blues/rock these days. The latest LP Glass Walkways released on 1st Feb 2019 is an exploration and a creation of the blues. Its been receiving some positive feedback including radio play on BBC Radio Wales Frank Hennessy’s Celtic Heartbeat, Roots and Fusion Pure FM, Tin Can Review Resonance FM, Blues and Roots Radio FM. He’s “still grafting and producing disarmingly well-crafted paeans and minor anthems” Monolith Cocktail
SLATEMEN – emanating from the slate quarries of Snowdonia, Hywel Griff (ex-Howl Griff, guitars, bass and vocals), Frank Naughton (ex-RocketGoldStar, keys and string arrangements, bass) and Tim Robinson (drums) set off to Cardiff to record at Frank’s Tŷ Drwg Studio, Grangetown, Cardiff and Hywel Griff’s Seindon Studio, also in Cardiff.
Howl Griff received airplay on BBC 6Music (Lauren Laverne, Gideon Coe) and had a BBC Radio Wales single of the week.Howl Griff are taking a hiatus giving Hywel Griff the opportunity to work with Frank Naughton again.Frank himself was a part of the Cardiff art rock band RocketGoldStar, who had a BBC Maida Vale session in 2001.
Working on the songs through the latter part of 2017 – they were bound by a shared appreciation of 80s/90s computer games, progressive rock, 60s/70s psych, Scott Walker, soul music and surf guitar rock’n’roll. The album was produced by Frank Naughton and the songs were all written by Hywel Griff. Some of the songs were written in London, while HG was living near Brixton.Moving back home to Wales and living in Dinorwig, Snowdonia, new songs began to emerge with a different vibe to the London songs. This is apparent on the album.
Frank Naughton and Tim Robinson also play in Welsh music legend Geraint Jarman’s band.
Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales DJ played Megaton Chase on his 3rd March 2018 show and called it ‘Bloody Magic!’.
Record label:Hywel Griff’s very own CatDog Records (digital, CD and possibly small vinyl run)
‘Wedi’ is the Welsh language 14 track debut album from She’s Got Spies. It’s released on September 14th 2018, available on CD and digital download, on Rheidol Records.
The album spans recordings from 2006 to 2009 and these songs are here seeing the proper light of day for the first time in album form. The songs are an eclectic, melodic, sometimes summery, sometimes melancholic mix which work well together.
She’s Got Spies were formed in 2005 and were asked to perform on S4C’s Welsh language music programme Bandit before going on to perform live. Since then they’ve played several gigs around Wales including the National Eisteddfod, and have gone on to play in several countries including Russia, Italy, Bulgaria, and most recently, performed on board a ship in Antarctica. They have also previously recorded sessions for BBC Radio Cymru and received radio airplay as far afield as the USA. Laura hails from London originally, where she first started learning Welsh, before forming the band in Cardiff.
After spending a few years in exile in Moscow, Russia, Laura has returned home to release this debut, with gigs planned from September onwards.
‘Wedi’ yw’r albym gyntaf gan She’s Got Spies. Rhyddheir yr albym iaith Gymraeg 14 trac ar Fedi 14 2018 ac mi fydd ar gael ar CD ac i’w lawr lwytho yn ddigidol. Recordwyd y caneuon rhwng 2006 a 2009 ac maent yn gweld golau dydd yma am y tro cyntaf ar ffurf albwm. Mae’r albym yn gymysgedd eclectig, melodig, weithiau hafaidd, weithiau melancolic, sy’n gweithio’n dda gyda’i gilydd fel casgliad.
Ffurfiwyd She’s Got Spies yn 2005. Yn fuan wedyn, gofynnwyd iddynt berfformio ar raglen cerddoriaeth Gymraeg S4C Bandit cyn iddynt fynd ymlaen i berfformio’n fyw. Ers hynny, maent wedi chwarae nifer o gigs o amgylch Cymru gan gynnwys yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, ac maent wedi mynd ymlaen i chwarae mewn sawl gwlad, yn gynnwys Rwsia, yr Eidal, Bwlgaria, ac yn fwyaf diweddar perfformiwyd ar long yn yr Antarctig. Maent hefyd wedi recordio sesiynau ar gyfer BBC Radio Cymru – sesiynau a gafodd sylw cyn belled a’r Unol Daleithiau.
Mae Laura o Lundain yn wreiddiol, lle dechreuodd ddysgu Cymraeg cyn ffurfio’r band yng Nghaerdydd. Ar ôl treulio ychydig o flynyddoedd yn alltud ym Moscow, Rwsia, mae Laura wedi dychwelyd adref i ryddhau’r albym gyntaf yma, gyda gigs wedi eu cynllunio o fis Medi ymlaen.
